A four-run uprising in the third inning sent the Phillies on their way to a 9-4 decision over the Cardinals. Larry Bowa began the Phils' fourth with a double and went to third on a single by Manny Trillo. After Dickie Noles sacrificed Trillo to second and Lonnie Smith popped out, Pete Rose drilled a two-run single and Gary Matthews followed with a homer. Matthews also delivered an RBI single in the fifth. Dick Davis clouted a solo homer in the sixth and Mike Schmidt smacked a three-run double in the ninth. [The Sporting News]
