The aroused Phillies pounded out eight straight hits, seven of them singles, and sent 16 batters to the plate in an 11-run third inning that decided an eventual 14-6 rout of the Cardinals. Gary Matthews drove in four runs with a pair of singles in the third-inning explosion that represented the National League season high for runs scored in one inning. Gene Tenace drove in four of the Cardinals' runs with homers in the second and eighth innings.
