The Phillies and Cubs divided a twin bill, the Phils taking the opener, 5-2, as Steve Carlton notched his 13th victory, and the Cubs capturing the nightcap, 14-0, behind a barrage of extra-base hits. The Phils took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the lidlifter on a sacrifice fly by Mike Schmidt, and iced the contest in the fourth on a three-run homer by Bake McBride.

Pat Tabler belted a three-run homer to put the Cubs up 3-0 in the second inning of the second game. It was his first big league homer. Bill Buckner and Ty Waller drove in four runs apiece, Buckner with a pair of homers and a two-run double, and Waller with an RBI single and bases-loaded triple. [The Sporting News]
