Shelling five Montreal pitchers for 13 hits, the Cardinals routed the Expos, 8-4, and took over first place in the N.L. East. The Redbirds took a 3-2 lead in the first inning on a two-run double by Gene Tenace and RBI single by Ken Oberkfell.

Garry Templeton stroked a sacrifice fly in the second and the Redbirds added another pair in the third on a run-scoring triple by Oberkfell and RBI bunt single by David Green. Oberkfell, who went 4-for-4, drove in his third run of the game with a fifth-inning single. [The Sporting News]
