A three-run pinch-homer by Mike Schmidt in the bottom of the ninth inning rallied the Phillies to a 9-7 victory over the Cubs. The Phils trailed, 7-6, when Gary Matthews led off the ninth with a single, was sacrificed to second by Ramon Aviles and took third on an infield hit by Garry Maddox. Manny Trillo popped up for the second out but Schmidt then followed with his 30th round-tripper of the season. [The Sporting News]
