Pounding Steve Carlton for seven hits in six innings, the Expos prevailed over the Phillies, 3-1, in the first game of the N.L. East Division Playoff Series. Montreal tallied once in the first inning. Warren Cromartie led off with a single and was forced on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Jerry White, who then stole second and scored when Gary Carter laced a two-out double off the left field fence.

Keith Moreland tied the score with a leadoff homer in the second, but the Expos took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame on doubles by Tim Wallach and Chris Speier. The Expos added an insurance marker in the fourth on a walk to Speier, sacrifice bunt by Steve Rogers and Cromartie's run-scoring double.
