The Brewers employed the lusty hitting of Ted Simmons and Paul Molitor to defeat the Yankees, 5-3, and fight off elimination in the A.L. East Division Series. With the Brewers trailing, 1-0, going into the seventh inning, Cecil Cooper led off with a single. Play was then interrupted when a fan, angered by a controversial call in the previous inning, leaped onto the field and assaulted third base umpire Mike Reilly. After order was restored, Ted Simmons hit a homer to put Milwaukee ahead, 2-1. The Brewers added another run later in the inning on an RBI single by Sal Bando, but the Yankees tied the game in the bottom of the frame on run-scoring singles by Rick Cerone and Willie Randolph. Paul Molitor broke the 3-3 tie in the top of the eighth with a solo homer and Simmons provided insurance with an RBI double. [The Sporting News] |
