Collecting 13 hits and aided by four Montreal errors, the Phillies staved off elimination in the N.L. East Division Series by defeating the Expos, 6-2. The game's result left Montreal ahead, 2-1 in games in the best-of-five set. After the Expos took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI single by Chris Speier, the Phils tallied twice in the bottom of the frame on a run-scoring single by Gary Matthews and a throwing error by center fielder Andre Dawson.

They picked up another pair in the sixth on an RBI pinch-single by George Vukovich and Pete Rose's run-scoring hit. Mike Schmidt doubled to lead off the bottom of the seventh and scored when reliever Elias Sosa made a wild throw on an infield hit by Matthews.
