. . . where the 1970s live forever!
Displaying traditional power, the Yankees slaughtered the A's, 13-3, to take a two games to none lead in the best-of-five series for the A.L. pennant. The Bronx Bombers lashed out 19 hits for a Championship Series record. The 13 runs also set a record and Graig Nettles, who went 4-for-4 including a three-run homer, became the first player to collect two hits in the same inning in a Championship Series game.

That happened in the fourth frame when the Yanks exploded for seven runs. Nettles opened the New York fourth with a single and Bob Watson flied out. Rick Cerone was hit by a pitch and Willie Randolph's single scored Nettles. After Jerry Mumphrey walked to load the bases, Dave Beard relieved Steve McCatty for Oakland and was greeted by Larry Milbourne's run-scoring single. Then came a two-run double by Dave Winfield and Lou Piniella's three-run homer. [The Sporting News]
