Bump Wills and Keith Moreland, off-season acquisitions, triggered the Cubs to a 3-2 opening-day triumph over the Reds in a game called after eight innings because of rain. Wills smashed the second pitch of the game over the right field fence. Moreland homered leading off the second inning and delivered a run-scoring single in the eighth.

Starter and winner Doug Bird yielded one run and five hits in seven innings. The game was played in miserable weather, with the game-time temperature at 42 degrees, and there were delays of 46 and 51 minutes before the contest was called. [The Sporting News]
