A bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 11th inning plated the winning run as the A's shaded the Angels, 3-2, in the season opener for both teams. The score was 2-2 when Dwayne Murphy led off the bottom of the 11th with a walk and, two outs later, reached third on Wayne Gross' single.

After Jim Spencer was walked intentionally, Davey Lopes walked on a 3-2 pitch to force home the decisive tally. Winning pitcher Jeff Jones hurled 3 1/3 innings in relief and gave up just one hit. The A's had deadlocked the contest in the sixth on Murphy's two-run homer. [The Sporting News]
