. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Driving in five runs with a homer, double, single and sacrifice fly, Jim Maler paced the Mariners to an 11-7 season-opening triumph over the Twins as 52,279 -- the largest crowd ever to watch a Minnesota baseball game -- turned out for the first regular-season contest in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

The Mariners broke a 4-4- tie in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Bruce Bochte and took a 6-4 margin in the sixth on Maler's sacrifice fly. Twins rookie third baseman Gary Gaetti had a pair of homers, a triple and a single and drove across four runs. [The Sporting News]
