Dusty Baker's single in the bottom of the ninth inning scored the winning run as the Dodgers began the defense of their world championship by edging the Giants, 4-3. The score was 3-3 when Bill Russell opened the L.A. ninth with a double and advanced to third on a single by Steve Sax.

After an intentional walk to Ron Roenicke loaded the bases, Greg Minton replaced Gary Lavelle on the mound for the Giants and yielded the winning hit to Baker. The Giants had tied the game in the sixth on RBI singles by Jeff Leonard and Milt May. [The Sporting News]
