Bob Bailor cracked two doubles and a single and drove in three runs to trigger the Mets to a 7-2 triumph in the season's opener for both teams. New York touched Steve Carlton for two runs in their first turn at bat on doubles by Bailor and George Foster and a throwing error by Manny Trillo. Bailor drilled a run-scoring double in the fifth frame and delivered a two-run single during a four-run seventh.

It was the Mets' eighth straight opening day victory. The Phillies' loss spoiled the managerial debut of Pat Corrales. The game was played 41-degree temperatures and winds which gusted up to 28 mph. The original opening date had been postponed twice because of cold weather. [The Sporting News]
