Bob Knepper and Dave Smith combined on a four-hit shutout as the Astros outlasted the Cardinals, 1-0. The only run Joaquin Andujar permitted his former Houston teammates was unearned in the eighth inning.

Art Howe stroked an inning-opening double to right-center and was sacrificed to third. With the infield drawn in for a play at the plate, pinch-hitter Denny Walling grounded to St. Louis second baseman Tommy Herr, who couldn't find the handle on the routine chance as pinch-runner Dickie Thon crossed the plate with the decisive tally.
