A pinch-single by Buck Martinez chased the winning run home in the bottom of the ninth as the Blue Jays outlasted the Tigers, 5-4. The Jays had a 4-0 lead going into the ninth but the Tigers tied the game on a two-run pinch-single by Chet Lemon, RBI groundout by Lou Whitaker and run-scoring single by John Wockenfuss. In the bottom of the frame, Wayne Nordhagen delivered a pinch-single with two out and was replaced by pinch-runner Tony Johnson, who stole second and then scored on Martinez' hit.
