A single by Omar Moreno drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning as the Pirates won their home opener by shading the Cubs, 7-6. The game was tied, 6-6, when Tony Pena opened the Bucs' 12th by being hit with a pitch.

Johnny Ray laid down a sacrifice bunt and both runners were safe when Bump Wills failed to touch the bag on the throw to first. A sacrifice by Jim Smith advanced both runners and, after Steve Nicosia was walked intentionally to load the bases, Moreno delivered the decisive blow.
