A two-run homer by Glenn Hoffman climaxed a three-run fourth inning that triggered the Red Sox to an 8-3 thumping of the Orioles, Baltimore's seventh straight loss. Jim Rice led off the Bosox fourth with a walk and stayed on first as Carney Lansford and Dave Stapleton flied out.

Tony Perez then hit a sinking liner to center which Gary Roenicke dived for and appeared to have caught. But umpire Ken Kaiser ruled it a trap and Rice came around from first to score. Hoffman then hit the next pitch for his round-tripper. The Sox put the game away with a four-run outburst in the eighth, the key blow being a two-run double by Dwight Evans. [The Sporting News]
