The Phillies snapped the Cardinals' 12-game winning streak, 8-4, as Steve Carlton, going 8 1/3 innings, notched his first victory after four losses. The Phils took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a single by Gary Matthews. They added three runs in the fifth as Bob Dernier and Ivan DeJesus stroked run-scoring singles and Dernier scored as the Cards ran down DeJesus between first and second.

The Phils iced the game with four runs in the eighth on sacrifice flies by Pete Rose and Manny Trillo, Matthews' single and a Garry Maddox double. The Cards tallied three times in the ninth inning but Ed Farmer came on to choke off the rally. [The Sporting News]
