The Tigers scored two runs in the 11th inning to down the White Sox, 6-4. The score was 3-3 after nine innings and both teams tallied once in the 10th -- the Tigers on a leadoff homer by Larry Herndon and the Sox on an RBI single by Steve Kemp.

With one out in the top of the 11th, Lou Whitaker singled and Salome Barojas replaced Jerry Koosman on the hill. Chet Lemon continued the rally with a single that sent Whitaker to third. Enos Cabell then hit a grounder to third baseman Jim Morrison, whose throw home was too late to get Whitaker. Kirk Gibson added insurance with a run-scoring single.
