Phil Garner celebrated his 33rd birthday by hitting a three-run homer against his former team as the Astros shaded the Pirates, 4-3. The Astros took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Jose Cruz.

In the fourth frame, Alan Ashby singled, Art Howe walked and Garner followed with his second round-tripper of the year. The Bucs scored all their runs in the seventh stanza on a solo homer by Jason Thompson and two-run circuit clout by Mike Easler. [The Sporting News]
