The Reds and Cardinals split a doubleheader, the Reds taking the first game, 5-1, and the Cardinals winning the second contest, 6-4. The Reds tallied twice in the first inning of the lidlifter on an RBI single by Dave Concepcion and a throwing error by catcher Darrell Porter, and added three runs in the third on a run-scoring groundout by Cesar Cedeno, sacrifice fly by Larry Biittner and RBI single by Dan Driessen.

In the second game, John Martin had a no-hitter until Ron Oester cracked a leadoff double in the seventh inning. Cincinnati finally kayoed the lefthander in the ninth but Bruce Sutter came on to register his eighth save. Keith Hernandez stroked an RBI single in the first inning. The Cardinals then exploded for five runs in the seventh on a two-run single by Hernandez and three-run homer by Gene Tenace. [The Sporting News]
