Dave Stapleton's inside-the-park homer -- the first at Fenway Park since 1976 -- capped a four-run first inning that sent the Red Sox to a 6-2 victory over the Twins and their 12th win in 13 outings. The Sox' outburst in the first began with walks to Jerry Remy and Dwight Evans. One out later, Carl Yastrzemski doubled home both runners. After Carney Lansford fanned, Stapleton sliced a liner to right which landed inches from a diving Mickey Hatcher. By the time the ball was relayed to the infield, Stapleton was rounding third. He beat the throw home with a head-first slide. Rich Gedman led off the fifth frame with a double and Rick Miller followed with a round-tripper, his first of the season. [The Sporting News] |
