Three-run homers by George Vukovich and Steve Carlton powered the Phillies to a 9-4 victory over the Giants. Vukovich's blast broke a 4-4 tie in the fifth inning and followed a walk to Mike Schmidt and an error by third baseman Darrell Evans.

Carlton's clout came in the second inning after a walk to Bo Diaz and single by Manny Trillo. Carlton struck out 10 in seven innings and Ron Reed came on to hurl two scoreless frames. [The Sporting News]
