An errant throw on a double-play attempt allowed the decisive run to score as the Tigers dealt the Rangers their 10th straight defeat, 4-3. The game was tied, 3-3, when Chet Lemon opened the Detroit eighth with a walk and reached second on a sacrifice.

After Kirk Gibson was walked intentionally, Larry Herndon bounced to third baseman Buddy Bell, who threw to second baseman Doug Flynn to force Gibson. But Gibson slid hard into second and Flynn's relay sailed into the dugout, allowing Lemon to trot home. [The Sporting News]
