The winning run came in on an error as the Cardinals shaded the Braves, 8-7. The game was tied, 7-7, when Lonnie Smith began the bottom of the ninth with a walk and stole second.

Ozzie Smith then laid down a bunt that pitcher Rick Camp fielded but first baseman Chris Chambliss dropped the throw, enabling Lonnie Smith to race home with the decisive marker. Darrell Porter was the hitting hero for the Redbirds, delivering a two-run single in the sixth and tying the game with a leadoff homer in the eighth after the Braves had taken a 7-6 lead in the top of the frame on an RBI single by Claudell Washington.
