Ineffective Baltimore relief pitching enabled the A's to shade the Orioles, 5-4. The A's trailed, 4-1, going into the bottom of the eighth, when Baltimore reliever Jim Palmer loaded the bases by yielding a single to Tony Phillips and walking Rickey Henderson and Dwayne Murphy.

Palmer was yanked in favor of Tim Stoddard, who gave up a two-run single to Cliff Johnson. Stoddard then got the hook and Tippy Martinez came on to reload the bases by walking pinch-hitter Wayne Gross. Davey Lopes bounced into a home-to-first double play, but Dan Meyer followed with a two-run single that proved decisive. [The Sporting News]
