The Padres edged the Cubs, 2-1, despite losing pitcher Fergie Jenkins getting his 3,000th career strikeout. Jenkins, who joined six other major league pitchers in attaining the 3,000 strikeout mark, reached that goal by fanning Garry Templeton in the third inning. He went on to strike out three more and run his career total to 3,003. In the Padres' second inning, Sixto Lezcano singled and scored on a double by Terry Kennedy, who then came home on Broderick Perkins' single. [The Sporting News]
