A two-run pinch-single by Gary Woods in the ninth inning lifted the Cubs to a 5-3 triumph over the Padres. The game was tied, 3-3, when Keith Moreland opened the ninth with a single and went to third on a single by Leon Durham. After pinch-hitter Dan Briggs struck out, Larry Bowa attempted a squeeze play but pitcher Luis DeLeon threw Moreland out at the plate. Woods then delivered the decisive hit. [The Sporting News]
