Wally Backman's first major league homer was the decisive blow as the Mets posted a 6-4 triumph over the Braves. The Mets trailed, 4-2, going into the fifth inning and scored one run on walks to George Foster and Dave Kingman and a single by Gary Rajsich. After Hubie Brooks bounced into a forceout, Backman unloaded a three-run circuit clout. Mets relievers Craig Swan and Neil Allen shut out the Braves over the final seven innings.
