Staging a three-run rally in the top of the ninth inning, the Tigers edged the Angels, 4-3. Detroit, trailing 3-1, loaded the bases on singles by Richie Hebner and Larry Herndon and a walk to Lance Parrish. Lou Whitaker's single scored Hebner and Herndon to tie the game and Jerry Turner followed with the game-winning pinch-single. Brian Downing hit a homer for the Angels in the fifth and Bobby Grich cracked a leadoff round-tripper in the sixth. [The Sporting News]
