Detroit, trailing 3-1, loaded the bases on singles by Richie Hebner and Larry Herndon and a walk to Lance Parrish. Lou Whitaker's single scored Hebner and Herndon to tie the game and Jerry Turner followed with the game-winning pinch-single.
