After pitching no-hit ball for seven innings, Phil Niekro settled for a four-hitter over 8 2/3 innings as the Braves defeated the Mets, 3-1. The first hit off the veteran righthander was a leadoff single by Bob Bailor in the eighth. Niekro left the game in the ninth with the bases loaded and two out and Steve Bedrosian came on to strike out Wally Backman to end the game. The Braves got all their runs in the third inning when Mets left fielder George Foster dropped a two-out liner by Dale Murphy for one run and Bob Watson followed with a two-run homer.
