Cincinnati upset Oakland with an all-round attack sparked by Jess Phillips' rushing in the regular season opener in the new Bengals' stadium. Phillips registered 130 yards on 15 carries, and one of these was a 76-yard dash up the middle. Sam Wyche passed for a TD to Essex Johnson and ran for another. Daryle Lamonica's 265-yard aerial barrage included a pair of TD passes to Fred Biletnikoff for the Raiders. Cincinnati had been the only team to beat Oakland in regular season competition the previous year.
