Tom Dempsey, who was born without the front half of his right foot and no fingers on his right hand, kicked a record 63-yard field goal to win the game on a play that started with two seconds remaining and concluded with no time left. Detroit had taken a 17-16 lead on Errol Mann's 18-yard field goal with 11 seconds remaining. Al Dodd returned the kickoff to New Orleans' 28, and then caught a 17-yard pass from Billy Kilmer at the 45. Dempsey then kicked the field goal.
