Detroit had taken a 17-16 lead on Errol Mann's 18-yard field goal with 11 seconds remaining. Al Dodd returned the kickoff to New Orleans' 28, and then caught a 17-yard pass from Billy Kilmer at the 45. Dempsey then kicked the field goal.
