Norm Bulaich, a second-year running back, established a Baltimore single-game rushing mark with 198 yards on 22 carries on a muddy field. Bulaich played on a sprained ankle after the first period, and utilized a borrowed helmet in breaking the 16-year mark of 194 yards established by Alan Ameche. John Unitas played briefly in the fourth period, his first appearance since Achilles tendon surgery in the spring.

A pair of second-period touchdowns on fumble recoveries just six seconds apart by linebacker Ralph Heck and safety Joe Green (on the ensuing kickoff) and three touchdown receptions by wide receiver Rich Houston highlighted the Giants' victory after six preseason losses. Linebacker Jim Files halted a late Green Bay drive by intercepting a Scott Hunter pass. The Packers' Ken Ellis tied an NFL record by returning a missed field goal 100 yards for a touchdown. Green Bay coach Dan Devine suffered a fractured leg in a sideline pileup of players.

Rookie quarterback Jim Plunkett, the No. 1 pick in the '71 draft, paced the Patriots to a second-half victory over favored Oakland, passing successfully to Ron Sellers and Roland Moss for TDs. The Patriots' offensive line prevented Oakland from reaching the rookie signal caller even once. A bad snap from center on Oakland's only extra point attempt ended George Blanda's scoring streak after 70 games.
