In snapping NFL champion Dallas' winning streak at 12, Green Bay's defense continued to provide opportunities for the offense, intercepting three passes (two by Al Matthews) and recovering two fumbles. Just before halftime, the Packers held the Cowboys for three downs on the 1-yard line, forcing Dallas to settle for a field goal. Rookie kicker Chester Marcol's three field goals for Green Bay proved the difference.

Dan Pastorini passed the Oilers to their first victory, and Skip Butler kicked four FGs to turn back the favored Jets in a game in which the Oilers beat a team with a winning record for the first time at home since 1965. Joe Namath had his 19th 300-or-more yards game, moving him into a third place tie in that category on the all-time NFL list with George Blanda.

The Patriots achieved a victory over an NFC rival for the second successive week by a one-point margin. Washington kicked the tying 32-yard FG in the last two minutes but decided to take the penalty when the Patriots ran into the kicker, Curt Knight. Three attempts picked up only one yard and this time Knight was wide from the 27. Washington subsequently picked up two points on a safety when Patriots' Pat Studstill's punt was blocked through the end zone. Washington's final gasp was a 50-yard attempt by Knight following Speedy Duncan's 19-yard return of New England's free kick. Rookie RB Josh Ashton scored twice for New England and had 108 yards on 23 carries.
