Ron Johnson and Vince Clements, regular New York RBs, did not play because of injuries and TE Bob Tucker, who caught Norm Snead's scoring pass in the second quarter, was forced out in the second half. Billie Joe DuPree, a rookie TE from Michigan State, caught three TD passes, two from starter Roger Staubach and one from Craig Morton while the Cowboys rolled up 578 yards to hand St. Louis its first defeat. Dallas mixed the running of Calvin Hill (84 yards) and Walt Garrison (53) with Staubach's accurate passes for a 31-3 lead before Morton took over in the final quarter. Morton hit with two TD passes. Rookie QB Gary Keithley led the Cards to their only touchdown. The win put unbeaten Dallas into sole possession of first place in the NFC Eastern Division.

Three FGs by Jan Stenerud and an aggressive Kansas City defense that held Oakland to 149 yards of total offense helped defeat the Raiders. George Blanda's 21-yard FG in the second quarter, the only score by the Raiders, was set up by a 76-yard kickoff return by Clarence Davis. Willie Lanier put the game away when he intercepted a Ken Stabler pass and ran 17 yards for a TD with 1:52 to play.

Rookie Chuck Foreman and Ed Marinaro carried the heavy offensive burden but three field goals by Fred Cox and a safety provided all the points for the Vikings in a bruising defensive battle. Foreman rushed for 89 yards and Marinaro for 83 and the two RBs caught nine of Fran Tarkenton's 12 completions. Chester Marcol, who missed from the 34 and 37, kicked a 42-yard FG for the Pack. ?It was a couple of heavyweights slugging it out,? said Vikings coach Bud Grant.
