Dick Butkus scored the first touchdown of his nine-year NFL career by recovering Dan Pastorini's fumble in the end zone. Butkus also intercepted a pass to start the Bears on the way to their final score, a one-yard pass from rookie Gary Huff to Earl Thomas in a 35-14 win. Ike Hill returned the second half kickoff 95 yards for another score. The victory ended a three-game Chicago losing streak and extended Houston's to 18 over two years.

The battle of the unbeatens wound up in a defensive struggle as the Vikings opened up a 10-0 lead and then forced the Rams to settle for three FGs. Fred Cox kicked a 15-yarder and Fran Tarkenton threw to Chuck Foreman for a nine-yard scoring play. The Rams pecked away, with David Ray kicking FGs from the 30, 35, and 47, but Jeff Siemon sacked John Hadl for a 15-yard loss to blunt the last Los Angeles threat.

Three FGs by Garo Yepremian and the running combo of Mercury Morris and Larry Csonka helped Miami come from behind in the second half for a 30-14 victory over New England. A fumbled snap on a Patriots punt set up Morris' dash from the 2 and Csonka climaxed a 75-yard drive with an 8-yard run to nail down the victory. Morris had 100 yards rushing.

Roman Gabriel threw two TD passes to Harold Carmichael and also scored on a 1-yard run as Philadelphia defeated Dallas for the first time since 1967. The Eagles' defense contributed two fumble recoveries and two interceptions, including Randy Logan's crucial steal of a Roger Staubach pass in the final quarter. Carmichael's four receptions moved him back into first place among NFC receivers.

Despite injuries to QB Terry Bradshaw and RB John Fuqua, Pittsburgh evened the season score with Cincinnati by beating the Bengals 20-13. Bradshaw suffered a shoulder separation in the second quarter and was replaced by Terry Hanratty whose 51-yard pass to Ron Shanklin put the Steelers ahead to stay. Fuqua suffered a shoulder injury. Steelers' safety Mike Wagner stole three passes and moved into first place among AFC interception leaders.
