Miami knocked Dallas out of a first-place tie in the NFC East on the running of Larry Csonka, passing of Bob Griese, and defensive play of Jake Scott. Scott intercepted a pass and ran 29 yards, setting up a one-yard touchdown by Csonka who rushed for 80 yards on 22 carries. Griese threw a touchdown pass to Paul Warfield, and the Dolphins controlled the ball in the final quarter. The victory was Miami's first over Dallas, which had beaten them in Super Bowl VI.

Washington took over undisputed leadership in the NFC East by handing Detroit its first shutout defeat in four years, 20-0, in a Thanksgiving Day game. Charley Harraway carried 18 times for 107 yards and also caught one of Billy Kilmer's two touchdown passes; the other went to Charley Taylor. Curt Knight kicked two field goals in five attempts. The shutout was the second of the season for Washington, which had blanked San Diego on opening day.
