Greg Pruitt raced 19 yards around end for the winning touchdown, culminating a drive in which Mike Phipps had hit Pruitt with a crucial 42-yard pass. The winning play followed a fumble by Joe Gilliam, who had taken over as the Pittsburgh quarterback after Terry Hanratty suffered a wrist injury early in the game. Gilliam threw a touchdown pass to Ron Shanklin in the first period and brought the Steelers to Cleveland's 15 in the final minute of the game but his four passes fell incomplete.
