O. J. Simpson gained 122 yards and Joe Ferguson threw three touchdown passes as Buffalo snapped New England's five-game winning streak and moved into a first-place tie in the AFC East. Sam Cunningham ran 75 yards for a score on the first play from scrimmage; it was the longest AFC run from scrimmage in 1974 and the first of his three TDs as Cunningham became the leading scorer in the conference. The Bills however came right back with 20 points in the first quarter and never yielded the lead. Simpson ran for one TD and caught a TD pass and Paul Seymour caught two TD passes.

St. Louis remained the only unbeaten team in the NFL, winning its sixth straight despite a strong closing bid by Houston's Dan Pastorini. Jim Hart converted two Oilers' fumbles into scoring passes to Earl Thomas within a space of 92 seconds in the second quarter. Pastorini completed 26 of 40 passes for 354 yards and led the Oilers back to within four points of the lead on scoring drives of 60 and 65 yards in the fourth quarter, each ending with a touchdown by George Amundson. Houston's Billy Johnson's 144 yards in kickoff returns lifted him back into the AFC lead in that category.

Kansas City scored first on a 21-yard field goal by Jan Stenerud and Miami narrowed the gap to 3-2 with a safety when Tim Foley blocked a Jerrel Wilson punt that bounced out of the end zone. Woody Green, the Chiefs' number one draft choice, made his first start and led all rushers with 98 yards on 24 carries.

Lydell Mitchell set a National Football League record with 40 carries while gaining 156 yards and scoring once in Baltimore's first victory of the season. After losing five in a row and changing coaches in the midst of the slump, the Colts came to life in New York with 355 offensive yards behind quarterback Bert Jones. Charlie Smith swept wide for two vital yards and a winning touchdown with eight seconds to play and no more time outs in a comeback victory. The Raiders gave up the ball on a punt with three minutes to go and then stopped the Bengals and mounted the winning drive with Ken Stabler throwing to Fred Biletnikoff, Bob Moore and Mike Siani in key plays. Oakland intercepted Ken Anderson twice and sacked him four times but Stabler was dumped five times by the Bengals who also recovered two fumbles in a seesaw game. Oakland's Cliff Branch took over the AFC receiving lead with seven catches for 96 yards.
