Lawrence McCutcheon boosted his league-leading rushing total to 649 yards by running for 139 and two fourth-quarter touchdowns that sunk the Jets. New York led 13-6 early in the final period before McCutcheon raced 23 yards into the end zone. Charlie Stukes intercepted a Joe Namath pass to set up McCutcheon's second score. In the closing seconds Namath was intercepted again, this time by Steve Preece, to snuff out the last threat. Namath completed 19 of 32 and the Jets scored twice on the ground with Mike Adamle and Emerson Boozer going over.
