Craig Morton made his first start for the New York Giants and threw a third-down 51-yard pass to Joe Dawkins for a victory over the Chiefs in the first-ever meeting of the two clubs. Len Dawson came off the bench and led an exciting Kansas City comeback that ended with the Chiefs on the 1-yard line as time ran out after Chuck Crist made a game-saving tackle on Larry Brunson. Ron Johnson returned to action and gained 66 yards and scored twice for the Giants. Rookie Woody Green had 66 yards and Ed Podolak 73 yards for the losers, who gained 403 yards.

Don Nottingham, filling in for injured Larry Csonka who missed his first game since October 4, 1969, scored three touchdowns and rookie Benny Malone had his second straight 100-yard plus game as the Dolphins defeated the Falcons. Paul Warfield returned to the lineup after missing four games and caught four of Bob Griese's passes. The battle of the Malone brothers was a walkover for Benny with 108 yards while his brother Art of the Falcons gained only 27.

The Bills took over undisputed possession of first place in the AFC East with their sixth straight win and a sweep of the important home-and-home series with the Patriots. John Leypoldt's third field goal, a 47-yard boot, proved to be the victory margin in a seesaw battle finally decided when the Bills' Jeff Yeates, aided by Dave Washington, blocked a 46-yard field goal attempt by John Smith with 56 seconds left. Jim Plunkett threw two touchdown passes for the losers and Mack Herron tied a club record with three touchdowns and gained 169 yards on runs, catches and kickoff returns.
