Kansas City eliminated Denver from any chance at the AFC West title in the wildest scoring game in the NFL since December 17, 1972 and the highest scoring Monday night game ever. Each team scored five touchdowns but a seemingly harmless safety touched off a decisive 19-point third quarter by the Chiefs. The teams gained a total of 896 yards and their combined total of 58 first downs tied an NFL record. Denver's 25 first downs passing broke a league record and the Broncos gained 491 through the air, 445 by Charley Johnson.
