The Lions erupted for their highest point total of the season and registered their sixth victory in the last seven games while the Bears were suffering their fifth straight loss. Detroit, which lost its first four games but climbed to within one game of the Central Division lead after 11 games, lost quarterback Bill Munson, who suffered a right shoulder separation and was replaced by Greg Landry, recently recovered from a left shoulder fracture sustained in the preseason. Dick Jauron's 103 yards in punt returns for the Lions moved him into the NFC top spot in that category.

The Cowboys ended the Oilers' four-game win streak and limited their state rival to 81 yards to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. Dallas' Doomsday Defense sacked quarterback Dan Pastorini seven times for 75 yards. Doug Dennison's one-yard touchdown leap and a 25-yard field goal by Efren Herrera took care of the scoring in the defensive struggle played before a sellout crowd. Houston's David Beverly recorded the AFC's longest punt in 1974 with a 69-yarder.

After the Eagles had pulled to within 13-7 of the Redskins early in the third period, rookie return specialist Larry Jones took the ensuing kickoff and raced 102 yards for a touchdown. It was the longest return in Washington history as well as the longest in the NFL in 1974, and helped send the Redskins toward their fourth straight victory and sixth in seven games to keep them one game behind St. Louis in the NFC Eastern Division race. Duane Thomas, subbing for the injured Larry Brown, paced the Washington running attack with 65 yards and a three-yard touchdown in 20 attempts.
