Lydell Mitchell rushed for 44 yards and caught seven passes to take the AFC lead in pass receptions.

The Lions eliminated the Bengals from any chance at the AFC playoffs with a scoring pass from Greg Landry to Charlie Sanders with 29 seconds to play. Ken Anderson, the Cincinnati quarterback, suffered a back injury in the third quarter and gave way to Wayne Clark, who almost became a hero by leading a fourth-quarter drive resulting in Ed Williams' two-yard scoring run. Horst Muhlmann kicked four field goals for the Bengals and Doug Dressler led the rushers with 62 yards while making six catches.

The Jets won their fifth straight and made the Bills settle for the wild card berth in the AFC playoffs. Joe Namath rallied the Jets, throwing a touchdown pass to Jerome Barkum with four minutes to play to erase a 10-6 Buffalo lead. Namath also hit Rich Caster for a score. Veteran quarterback Norm Snead relieved rookie Tom Owen and directed the 49ers on a 71-yard drive which produced the game's only touchdown, a two-yard burst by Delvin Williams, and Bruce Gossett added the extra point to produce the victory. San Francisco's defense permitted only two Chester Marcol field goals, and over the last four games had allowed only 13 points and one touchdown. Marcol moved ahead of Minnesota's Chuck Foreman in the NFC scoring race.
