The 49ers broke away from a tight 14-7 lead on the first play of the final period when Gene Washington took a 17-yard touchdown pass from rookie Tom Owen and 23 seconds later defensive tackle Bill Belk picked up a Saints' fumble and ran 19 yards to score. The victory, San Francisco's fourth in its last five games, gave the 49ers second place in the NFC West.
