There was nothing spectacular about the Vikings' opening victory as they began a quest for a third consecutive NFC title. The defense kept the 49ers under control with four sacks and recovered three fumbles, including strong safety Terry Brown's pickup and 26-yard return for a touchdown. Brent McClanahan, starting in place of Chuck Foreman, who had just recovered from a sore knee, rushed 61 yards and caught six passes for 73. John Gilliam caught three passes for 43 yards as Fran Tarkenton completed 14 of 26 for 165 yards and a 10-yard touchdown to McClanahan.
