Jim Plunkett reinjured his left shoulder while running the ball in the first quarter and rookie Steve Grogan came in to direct the Patriots to their second win with a pair of touchdown passes to Andy Johnson and Randy Vataha. Johnson, playing for the injured Mack Herron, had his second consecutive 100-yard day with 103 yards on 21 carries. The three Patriots' scores were set up by an interception, a blocked punt, and a fumbled punt return. Trailing 17-0 at the half, Norm Snead rallied the 49ers by completing 22 of 41 passes for 224 yards.
