Franco Harris broke loose for 157 yards, his best ever in regular season play, and Terry Bradshaw hit with a pair of touchdown passes to Lynn Swann as the Steelers snapped the Bengals' six-game winning streak. Cincinnati's first defeat left them in a three-way tie with Pittsburgh and Houston for the AFC Central lead. The surging Oilers moved into a triple tie with Cincinnati and Pittsburgh for the AFC Central lead with the help of two touchdown passes by Dan Pastorini to the fleet Ken Burrough for 77 and 57 yards. Bob Atkins' interception of a Mike Livingston pass with 4:53 to go and Curley Culp's recovery of a fumbled snap with 1:17 remaining in the game saved the day for the Oilers, who won their fourth in a row. Burrough caught seven passes for 177 yards, top yardage in the first half of the AFC season. It was the Oilers' 12th win in 15 games since Curley Culp joined the club last season.

Joe Ferguson's third touchdown pass of the game, a 64-yarder to O. J. Simpson, capped a Buffalo comeback after they trailed 23-7 in the third quarter. Simpson's 94 yards on 21 carries put him over the 1,000-yard mark for the fourth straight year at 1,005 and also moved him past Leroy Kelly into fourth place in the all-time rushing standings with a career total of 7,311 yards. The Jets, leading 23-17 with barely five minutes to play, passed up a field goal attempt and failed to make yardage on fourth and one at the Bills' 20. Buffalo then moved for the winning touchdown in four plays. John Riggins rushed for 108 yards and Joe Namath threw two touchdown passes for the Jets.

Billy Kilmer dove one foot for a touchdown at 6:34 of overtime to give the Redskins a victory which sent them into a three-way tie for first place in the NFC East with the Cowboys and Cardinals. Kilmer's score climaxed a nine-play drive which began at the Dallas 35, following Ken Houston's interception of a Roger Staubach pass which he returned 14 yards to midfield and a 15-yard personal foul penalty against Dallas. Kilmer, who completed 21 of 39 for 301 yards and three touchdowns, earlier drove Washington 60 yards to tie the game with 1:52 remaining in regulation on a seven-yard scoring pass to Jerry Smith. Dallas kicker Toni Fritsch missed a 38-yard field goal attempt with nine seconds left in the fourth period.
